Fashion Decades

During the 1920's fashion entered a new era. It was the decade that women went from never revealing an ankle, to showing off calf muscles. Men abandoned the formal attire and began wearing athletic clothing. From 1925 onward, most people had embraced the new fashion. The new style was associated as the Roaring Twenties. The trends continued on into 1932.

Women's fashion went from corsets and floor length dresses to boyish figures and straight line figures. Women at a certain age continued to dress conservative but teens wore tubular dresses that were shorter with pleats, gathers and slits to allow movement.
Women's hair went from back-combed birds nests to sleek and sexy "bobs."
Women's undergarments, after the war, had conformed to a flatter chest and more boyish figure. During the mid-twenties lingerie became popular, and corsets were replaced by bloomers, knickers, and camisoles.

Coco Chanel was one of the first women to wear trousers, and therefore became the most influential women of the '20's. Coco freed women's fashion.

Elsa Schiaparelli became very influential in the late 1920's. Combining Greek and Roman designs with modern clothing. She designed evening gowns that were both simple and elegant.

In the early 20's men's fashion hadn't changed as dramatically as women's. Men wore extremely high waist-ed jackets worn with belts, lapels on suit jackets were not very wide as they were still narrow and straight and were worn rather short so men's socks often showed. In 1925 the "Oxford Bags" became fashionable, while suit jackets returned to a normal waist and lapels became wider. For evening wear, men preferred to wear the shorter tuxedo to the tail coat, which was scene as snobby if warn.

For the first time in centuries, women's dresses revealed knees and became more fitted. The masculine look became popular including flattened breasts, hips and shorter hairstyles. The fashion was bohemian and forth coming for it's age. Men's fashion was a little more relaxed but still very similar. 1920's was the era that fashion changed, no more corsets and hello trousers.
